We are delighted to welcome James Mickens as our new Residential Director. James was raised in California, has family in Colorado, and moved here from Kansas in December. We want to say “Thank you!” to James for his yes to our community and to this key role that oversees care for 16 core members in our four licensed homes and the Day Program.
Prior to coming to L’Arche Tahoma Hope, James lived at L’Arche Heartland, located in Overland Park, Kansas. He describes his eight years there as transformative, setting him on his life’s path. L’Arche taught James about giving of himself to others, learning to love them just for who they are right now. He notes that, “You can wish for change, but if you come expecting change, you will be disappointed.” James sees love as something actively chosen, and he credits his time in L’Arche for teaching him how to truly love people.
Relationships with adults with intellectual disabilities has made James more of an advocate for all humans. “I’m more aware and conscious of people facing challenges that are not readily apparent,” he says. “This world can be unforgiving, depending on the challenges we individually face.”
When asked what he hopes to bring to our community, James identified, “A sense of creativity, joy and wonder. I hope to uncover everyone’s gifts for the betterment of the community. Core members are so gifted, as well as assistants. There are people here who will make an incredible impact on the world. I hope to grow in mutually transformative relationships and aid in that growth for others around me.”
James has vivid memories of being an assistant – the joys and the challenges. That experience will influence how he approaches this new role. He is mindful of the need to ensure that assistants are living sustainable and enjoyable lives.
We are grateful for James’s yes, for his energy and enthusiasm, and for his willingness to share his gifts with our community. Welcome, and thank you!
