Volunteering on the Farm

When you come to volunteer at L’Arche Farm & Gardens, here are a few things to keep in mind:

For your safety and comfort, please: 

• Wear closed-toed shoes and dress in layers
• Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle
• Bring a mask in case you are working in close quarters or in a greenhouse

Optional:

• Gardening gloves
• Bee sting medication

We offer a range of tasks for many abilities. However, please be aware that farming is physical work, mostly outdoors in all kinds of weather, and it may require standing, squatting, bending, and lifting. We ask that you be open to tasks that depend on the season and the needs of the day. We’ll do our best to orient you and to explain the tasks at hand, and we’ll be glad to answer questions when you need more information. We provide all the tools you might need.

A word about our culture and values. We want to get to know you, and we want to share the L’Arche experience with you. As a matter of practice and sign of mutual respect for one another, we will share our pronouns with you. We’ll ask about your pronouns, and we all make our best effort to remember and use them correctly. When we make a mistake, we will thoughtfully correct each other with care. Similarly, we focus on abilities, celebrating one another’s gifts, and countering stereotypes, and not on diagnoses. Our desire is to work in harmony with one another and the land.
