L'Arche Tahoma Hope 2006 - 2010 Mandate

Grateful for God’s continued presence and provision in our community, we reaffirm our commitment to the mission of L’Arche Tahoma Hope. Knowing that it is mutual relationships that keep us rooted and God’s love that binds us together, we have discerned the following mandate in the spirit of our mission.Ensure necessary supports are in place to address the changing needs and health
concerns of community members.

Pursue additional avenues to provide meaningful work and day activities for core
members.

  1. Continue anticipating and addressing the needs of aging core members and assistants, including supports from outside professionals.
  2. Provide practical training and educational resources for assistants and employees on topics including death and dying, mental health care, and sexuality.

Reaffirm our mission to create a home life and community that celebrates open and loving relationships and diverse expressions of faith.

  1. Nurture our foundation in faith by continuing to encourage and support communal
prayer within the homes and community.
  2. Encourage the personal spiritual growth of all members.
    • Explore ecumenical services that foster unity and honor diversity within the community.
    • Create a pastoral team to assist community members in their faith journeys.
    • Ensure the ability of all members to attend the worship services of their choice.
  3. Pursue options for a community gathering space.

Enhance the community by strengthening relationships in the larger Tacoma community and within the family of L’Arche.

  1. Broaden our outreach efforts and diversify contacts to announce L’Arche to the greater community.
    • Create a comprehensive outreach plan to solidify and expand ties with external groups, e.g. schools, youth groups, and universities. Include opportunities for core members to announce L’Arche.
    • Build a pastoral network to enhance our visibility in the community and to create new advocates for our mission.
    • Cultivate relationships with appropriate government representatives and advocacy groups to improve our awareness of and influence over upcoming legislation and other policy directions that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
  2. In a spirit of abundance, build relationships of solidarity with our fellow L’Arche communities in the United States and throughout the world, particularly our sister community of El Arca in Santo Domingo.

Strengthen the sustainability of the community.

  1. Continue implementing the new membership document, thus creating additional supports for members of the community to choose L’Arche as a vocation.
    • Define and communicate what the membership document means for all daily life and supporting members. Clarify membership and supports for employees who wish to explore daily life membership in the community.
    • Continue strengthening benefit structures, particularly health care and retirement programs.
  2. Continue reviewing the expectations and sustainability of roles at all levels in the community. Refine infrastructures and processes to develop and promote shared leadership and knowledge. Involve community members in decisions affecting them, to the fullest extent possible.
  3. Build and implement a comprehensive development plan that enables the community to fully live its mission and this mandate.
    • Increase contributions to the community endowment fund.
    • Improve the sustainability of Farm and Gardens and Noah’s Workshop.
