The L'Arche Story

We are people, with and without developmental disabilities, sharing life in communities belonging to an international federation. Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heartof our journey together. We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need for one another.

The Mission of L'Arche is:

L'Arche, which means "the ark" in French, is an international federation of faith communities dedicated to providing a place of belonging for people with developmental disabilites. L'Arche began in 1964, in Trosly, France, when Jean Vanier, a French Canadian, decided to share his life with three men with disabilities. He wanted to give them a home where they could live and grow; a place where they could achieve their full potential and their unique value would be recognized.

There are now over 120 L'Arche communities in more than thirty countries around the globe. In 1977, our community, L'Arche Tahoma Hope, began in Tacoma, Washington (USA). We have grown to four homes, a day activity program and a supported employment program.

Relationships are at the heart of our community. We share ourselves with one another through laughter, tears, celebration and prayer. Our life at L'Arche Tahoma Hope is like that of a family. Some go off to school, work, or a day program. Others focus their attention on creating home.

There are many friends of L'Arche who do not live in the homes. They participate in community gatherings, provide links with the larger community, and are a source of great support. A volunteer Board of Directors holds the legal and financial responsibility for L'Arche Tahoma Hope. We receive funding from the State of Washington, we are supported by United Way's Donor Voice program, and we also rely heavily on the financial generosity of individuals, businesses, churches and private foundations.
